D.C. Guaranteed Income Advocates Took a Crucial Step toward Publicly Funded-GI in D.C.! Maintain the momentum of support for guaranteed income in Washington, D.C.! On July 8, during its budget report markup session, the D.C. City Council (“Council”) Business and Economic Development Committee approved $1.5 million for a guaranteed income pilot program, as well as $9 million for baby bonds, the “Child Wealth Building Act”. Due to the voices of our coalition and allies, the critical importance of guaranteed income pilot programs has been heard! Please keep up the momentum by expressing your support for guaranteed income to the entire Council!
The entire Council will hold its first vote on the guaranteed income, baby bonds, and other human needs measures in the local budget on July 20. Will you let the entire Council know that you back guaranteed income, baby bonds, human needs programs and just tax policy?
- Email, call, and tag D.C. City Councilmembers and urge them to support $1.5 million for guaranteed income pilot programs, $9 million for the baby bonds program, and adequate funding for human needs gaps in D.C.. Let them know that Guaranteed Income is a measure to provide cash payments unconditionally to allow impacted D.C. communities to meet basic human needs. The communities that benefit include mothers and fathers striving for economic stability, unpaid and low-wage caregivers, returning citizens, and other excluded workers. Guaranteed income will help achieve racial economic justice and will complement existing safety net measures.
- Speak up for progressive tax policy, which will help fund these critical anti-poverty measures.
- Thank Councilmember McDuffie, Chairof the Council Business and Economic Development Committee, for leading the way on guaranteed income and baby bonds for Washington D.C., initiatives that will help bridge the city’s racial income and wealth gap.
