At the October monthly meeting of the DC Universal Basic Income Coalition, participants rolled up their sleeves, thoughtfully discussed the group’s name and values, shared their reflections, and, by consensus, concluded that the time has arrived for our coalition to sharpen its name and to use language that captures our racial justice goals, our narrative-change efforts, and our movement. September 2021 Basic Income Pilot Program Meeting Summary
The meeting began with a September Lateral Learning Poll in which the participants were able to vote for what it is they want the organization to focus on and what they want to learn about in the month of September. Some ideas presented for the September Lateral Learning Session were: Ubi for parents and caregivers – child tax credits, UBI for workers – EITC, UBI for excluded workers, UBI from an international perspective, UBI for teens aging out of foster care, UBI and housing, and other topics.

In the days leading up to the march I wondered how many people who were not participants would be interested in learning more about UBI as we walked; I hoped the weather would be mild and the energy among those of us marching would remain high. This upcoming Saturday, September 25 at 1 pm – join us for brief tributes at the Martin Luther King Memorial on the National Mall, then proceed with us to the Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue. March and chant with us from the MLK Memorial past the World War II Memorial, the National Museum of African American History, along 15th Street and east to Pennsylvania Ave at the Wilson Building. D.C. Guaranteed Income Advocates Took a Crucial Step toward Publicly Funded-GI in D.C.! Maintain the momentum of support for guaranteed income in Washington, D.C.! On July 8, during its budget report markup session, the D.C. City Council (“Council”) Business and Economic Development Committee approved $1.5 million for a guaranteed income pilot program, as well as $9 million for baby bonds, the “Child Wealth Building Act”. The Marshall Plan for Moms is a policy concept that has been embedded in legislation (H.Res.121) that has been introduced to the House and is backed by prominent members of society and women-run organizations meant to restore mothers in the workforce. The Plan is modelled after the Marshall Plan of 1948, which offered economic support to Europe following World War II.

DC UBI Coalition meetings – what are they ?
Advocating for Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a priority for Mothers Outreach Network (MON) because we believe that guaranteed basic income can bring about economic justice for marginalized families in Washington, D.C. To this end, MON convenes the DC UBI Coalition, which has met via virtual gatherings every third Thursday since November 2020. The next DC UBI Coalition meeting will take place on March 18th at 5 pm. DC UBI Coalition meetings seek to educate, mobilize, and build support for our key campaign for guaranteed income pilots as a tool for racial equity.

We are excited to announce that The Mothers Outreach Network has won the Our VoicesDMV Community Action Award, presented by Comcast. This award provides micro-grants to individuals and nonprofits who are working to improve their region.
